Start with movement and item handling
Knowing the invokyr controls helps you pick up supplies, aim a die, and get back to the game-room table when danger appears. It also helps you recognize when a cursed idol is interfering with movement. Learn your movement, interaction, throwing, and dropping inputs before carrying anything through the manor.
Invokyr combines first-person exploration with a shared board game. Throwing the movement die advances the group's token and triggers an event. Between rolls, you explore rooms, handle objects, and complete the board's requirements. Reliable item controls matter throughout that loop.
| Action | Keyboard or mouse reference | When it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Move | WASD | Exploring rooms and returning to the board |
| Look around | Mouse movement | Navigating corridors and positioning your view |
| Drop a carried idol | G, demonstrated in gameplay | Setting down an idol or handing it over |
| Change a created lantern's color | Mouse scroll wheel | Adjusting the light produced by a Lantern Die |
The G input appears during an idol exchange in a gameplay video. Check your current binding before relying on it, especially after customizing your keyboard layout. The lantern interaction applies to the portable light created by a Lantern Die.
For interaction, sprinting, jumping, dice throwing, and voice chat, read the relevant action in Settings → Controls or follow its on-screen prompt. Confirming these inputs in the game room gives you time to understand them before an event changes the manor.

Controller buttons and Steam Input
The controller and keybindings guide lists Xbox, PlayStation, and generic gamepad configurations through Steam Input. Its published layout provides a starting reference for the actions below. Your selected profile and any custom mappings determine which physical buttons perform them.
| Action | Xbox-style input | PlayStation-style input |
|---|---|---|
| Move | Left stick | Left stick |
| Toggle sprint | Left stick click | L3 |
| Look and aim | Right stick | Right stick |
| Toggle flashlight or lantern | Right stick click | R3 |
| Throw dice or perform primary action | RT | R2 |
| Aim dice or perform secondary action | LT | L2 |
| Interact or pick up dice | A | Cross |
| Reload or use gadget | X | Square |
| Open inventory or ledger | Y | Triangle |
| Cycle equipped dice slots | D-pad up/down | D-pad up/down |
| View scoreboard and squad status | View/Select | Select equivalent |
| Open pause menu and settings | Menu/Start | Options/Start equivalent |
The table does not assign controller buttons for jumping, dropping objects, or voice chat. Find those actions in your active configuration before starting a run. A comfortable throw button is only part of the setup; you also need to know how to release a carried object.
To configure a controller through Steam:
- Connect the controller using USB or Bluetooth.
- Select Invokyr in your Steam library.
- Open the game's controller configuration.
- Enable Steam Input to access layouts and controller adjustments.
- Review the selected layout, then test its actions in-game.
If your controller has rear paddles or back grips, consider assigning a frequently used action there. Sprinting or selecting an item may feel easier when you can keep your thumb on the camera stick. Choose mappings you can remember under pressure.
Customize bindings and camera comfort
Open Settings → Controls to review keyboard bindings and sensitivity. Change a small number of settings at a time, then test them. This makes it easier to tell which adjustment improved movement or aiming.
Prioritize inputs that you use repeatedly or need quickly:
- Interaction: Choose a key you can reach comfortably while moving.
- Sprint: Check the available behavior and use a convenient binding. Shift is a suggested assignment in the controller guide, rather than a keyboard default established by its chart.
- Throwing and aiming: Keep both actions easy to distinguish.
- Dropping objects: Make this accessible when an idol's effect becomes disorienting.
- Dice selection: Practice selecting the intended slot before using a special die.
Sensitivity affects how easily you inspect rooms and position a throw. If small movements turn the camera too far, lower it gradually and test again. On a gamepad, review Steam Input's deadzone settings if the sticks feel difficult to control near their resting position.
The controller guide also describes the following visual and accessibility options. Menu placement may appear under the listed alternative tabs.
| Setting | Listed menu location | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Key bindings | Settings → Controls | Assignments for keyboard and mouse actions |
| Field of view | Settings → Video | How much of the surrounding scene is visible |
| Camera shake | Settings → Video or Accessibility | Screen movement during impacts and other effects |
| Arachnophobia option | Settings → Accessibility or Gameplay | Spider-related visuals and crawling silhouettes |
Adjust field of view and camera shake separately from input sensitivity. They change how camera movement feels visually, while sensitivity changes how strongly your input turns the view.
For controller customization, distinguish the game's action bindings from Steam Input's physical button mapping. Check both when a button performs an unexpected action. After making changes, verify the result in gameplay as well as in menus.

When controls change during a run
Unexpected movement can be part of an idol's effect. An idol's effect activates while you carry it, stops when you drop it, and returns when you pick it up again. Appearance alone does not reliably tell you what an idol will do, according to the gameplay guide.
After collecting one, briefly test movement before committing to a long journey. If something feels wrong, use the timing of the change to decide what to check first.
| What happens | What to check first | Useful next step |
|---|---|---|
| Movement reverses after an idol pickup | The carried idol's effect | Drop it and compare movement |
| Your view appears linked to another player | A possible idol effect | Coordinate directions with that teammate |
| Camera movement feels excessive without an idol | Sensitivity settings | Lower sensitivity and test again |
| A controller button performs an unexpected action | Active game and Steam Input mappings | Review the assignment in both places |
| The next movement die is unavailable | The board's current requirement | Complete the event or deliver enough idols |
A teammate can guide an affected carrier back to the game room. Give simple directions and pause when needed. Dropping the idol can help you regain your bearings, but you still need to arrange its delivery if it is required for progression.
Dice handling has a separate distinction: movement dice advance the board, while special dice produce effects. Check which die you have selected before throwing. Special dice are consumable, so experimenting with an unfamiliar input can spend a useful item.
When another movement die is unavailable, read the board before changing controls. Idol deliveries or an event requirement may still be outstanding. The displayed target determines what your group needs; the 300-point requirement seen in early gameplay is not a universal cost.
FAQ
Where can I check my invokyr controls?
Open Settings → Controls to review keyboard and mouse bindings. For a gamepad, also inspect Invokyr's controller configuration in Steam. Use the on-screen action prompts to check the controls you will use during play.
What button throws dice?
The published gamepad layout assigns throwing or primary action to RT on Xbox-style controllers and R2 on PlayStation-style controllers. For keyboard and mouse, check your throw binding or the prompt shown while holding a die.
How do I drop an idol?
Gameplay footage demonstrates G during an idol handoff. Verify that assignment in your own configuration. Dropping an idol also stops its carried effect, making it useful when movement becomes confusing.
Why are my movement controls reversed?
A carried idol can reverse movement. If the change began immediately after a pickup, drop the idol and test again. If normal movement returns, account for that effect when transporting the idol.
Can I change the controls?
The controls guide describes keyboard and mouse rebinding through the in-game settings. Controller layouts can also be adjusted through Steam Input. Test interaction, throwing, dropping, and movement after changing your setup.
How do I change a lantern's color?
Use the mouse scroll wheel for the portable lantern created by a Lantern Die, as described in the dice guide. A corresponding controller input has not been officially confirmed.
Is finishing a board only a button input?
The ending includes a microphone action. After returning the Gamemaster's Soul idol and sealing it into the board, say “Invokyr” into the microphone. Confirm that your microphone works before reaching that stage.
